Getting a new hot tub is great it’s likely you’re keen to get everything set up so you can reap the rewards, but before you do, read our top three tips below to make sure you have the best experience and most important of all, operate your hot tub safely.

  1. Think carefully about the positioning of your hot tub

When thinking about where to place your hot tub, it’s important to make sure that the ground is level. Uneven ground can cause all sorts of problems and means a less enjoyable experience. You should also consider where the nearest power supply is and make sure that it’s RCD protected – never use extension leads. Other considerations are how easily accessible the pump will be, for example it needs to be removed in future. How easy it will it be to drain the hot tub if and when you need to? If you have an inflatable hot tub, make sure there are no sharp objects near where you want your hot tub to be. If you can, use a natural windbreak and position your hot tub behind a fence or another type of windbreak. This will reduce exposure to the wind and will in turn, reduce your running costs.

We’ve included a summary below to help you decide where best to position your hot tub. When you have decided, it may also be worth investing in a floor protectors and other accessories if needed to reduce heat loss and protect your hot tub.

  1. Stock up on chemicals

Keeping your hot tub safe and sparkling will be down to the right dosage of the right chemicals. If you are starting your hot tub for the first time, there are plenty of starter kits available that will include everything you need to get your hot tub going. This usually includes chlorine granules, PH plus and minus, test strips and an anti-foam product. You can also buy a range of other products for your hot tub to fragrance or colour the water. Making sure that you have enough filter cartridges is equally as important. The filter is responsible for keeping the water clear of dirt and debris. Rinsing them with warm water frequently can extend their life but changing them often is best practice.

Remember, if you’re planning to use your hot tub in cooler weather, you should check your hot tub’s guide to find out what the ambient temperature limits are. If used below these temperatures, there is a risk that water can freeze inside the pump and damage it beyond repair. There are chemicals available which can be used in lower ambient temperatures to stop this from happening so that the hot tub can be used safely.
